According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of foreign visitors to Japan surpassed the 3 million mark in April 2024, following the previous month. The total number of visitors since the beginning of the year is 11.6 million, the fastest pace ever.
The Japan Tourism Agency's "Survey of Foreign Visitor Spending Trends" released last month also showed that total spending in the January-March 2024 period was 1,750.5 billion yen, up 73.3% from the same period last year and up 52.0% from the same period in 2019, before COVID-19.
However, travel spending per tourist was 209,000 yen, which has remained stagnant for five consecutive quarters since the lifting of the ban on inbound travel in the October-December 2022 period.

In Japanese accommodation industry, where business performance sank during the COVID-19 disaster, the resurgence of inbound tourism has helped many companies, especially those listed on the stock exchange, to recover their business performance.
At the same time, there is a serious shortage of labor, known as the 2025 problem, and even major hotel chains are having difficulty hiring new graduates this year.
In order to seize the opportunity of the unprecedented inbound boom and achieve further growth, it will be necessary to improve employee compensation and invest in training to retain human resources, and at the same time, make digital investments to increase the added value provided to customers.
